Mechanical contraptions cropped up in communities across America. But those regular citizens, the everyday folks, were not as enamored as the fevered inventors. Those that watched were torn between fascination and trepidation. Investors and their inventors showed little restraint or caution. They turned out sometimes frightening machines. Some lumbering and stupidly dangerous, others flying then falling. Sober citizens lost urgency for such wild measures. Reports of invaders from space had slowed and those stories were no longer found in reputable papers but now only in sensational rags.
